Biological Diversity Review

Science 9: Biological Diversity Review
  1. Describe variation and list an example of variation among species and an example within a species.
  2. Give the definition and state an example of a niche.
  3. Describe how variation plays a role in species’ ability to survive in specific
    niches/habitats.
  4. Give an example of how species can be dependent on other species (ie. a
    predator-prey relationship).
  5. Why is variation important when considering environmental changes?
  6. What is the difference between asexual and sexual reproduction?
  7. What are examples of asexual reproduction, sexual reproduction, and both asexual
    and sexual reproduction?
  8. How is an embryo and a zygote formed in a plant? In an animal?
  9. What is an example of discrete variation? Continuous variation?
  10. Draw a diagram of mitosis and meiosis-show the differences between them.
  11. What is incomplete dominance? Give an example.
  12. What is the difference between heritable and non-heritable characteristics?
  13. Give an example of a characteristic that is affected by both heredity and the
    environment.
  14. What is the relationship between chromosomes, genes and DNA?
  15. What are the advantages and disadvantages to asexual reproduction?
  16. What are the advantages and disadvantages to sexual reproduction?
  17. What is the difference between natural and artificial selection?
  18. What are examples of natural and artificial selection?
  19. Name a technology use for recombining genetic material and describe some
    issues associated with it.
  20. Where on Earth is there the greatest species diversity? Why?
  21. What is the difference between extinction and extirpation?
  22. Describe the role of an environmental factor that causes these changes.
  23. Name one strategy for minimizing species loss and give its advantages and
    disadvantages.
  24. What are the advantages and disadvantages to using biotechnology?
  25. What impacts could biotechnology’s use have on the environment or on society?
